Beyond the Fire

Step through the flames
into the unknown.
Take the snake path,
step into the red shoes,
demand the very pulse.

Sudden shift of coal
in the grate, the turning
of a page. Step on now,
do not be afraid.

The dozing mother jerks
awake, the child lost
in her book near
the dancing fire has
quite forgotten she is there.

Looking up, startled,
she sees only herself.
