The glory that was iris brittles and browns,
Marigolds shrivel to Bjork look-alikes,
And like you, narcissi have played and blown.
Roses that survived winter frosts–
Memories–like the privet in flower,
Permeate your days with sickly sweetness,
No hint of the feast to come; just like tight
Buds on pregnant oleanders and the pin head tips
Of fibre optic santolinas.
See how, freed from the burden of showy
Racemes, wisterias spiral skyward
Rookie tendrils trying for loop-the-loop,
And from the blackest dust, corn poppies blaze
Flooding forgotten fields with light,
Shouting the promise of a second coming.
